To many women, breasts
are part of what make them feel feminine. So, it makes an already stressful
situation if combating breast cancer, even more stressful when you come out of
it not feeling like yourself. Many women who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy
are unaware of their reconstruction options available to them. Breast
Reconstruction Awareness Day is an awareness campaign designed to put an end to
the unknown by promoting public education, patient care, and research.
Breast reconstruction often involves multiple procedures performed in stages and can either begin at the time of mastectomy or be delayed until a later date.

Breast reconstruction often involves multiple procedures performed in stages and can either begin at the time of mastectomy or be delayed until a later date.
The reconstruction
generally falls into two categories: implant-based reconstruction or flap
reconstruction. Implant reconstruction relies on breast implants to help form a
new breast mound, while flap (or autologous) reconstruction uses the patient's
own tissue from another part of the body to form a new breast.
There are a few factors
that should be taken into consideration when choosing which option is best
suited for each individual:
- Type of mastectomy
- Cancer Treatments
- Patient’s body type
